Thinking of taking on a similar project?
Planning a large project can be a daunting task but it is easier than you might think. We hope to pass on what we have learned throughout the All Saints Restoration Project and point you in the direction of helpful guidance elsewhere on the internet.
If you are considering a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund the best place to start is their own website which has details of all the various grant programmes they offer. There is also guidance both for the main application itself and the documents you will need to produce in support of your application and during the project. They aren’t all easy to find so we’ve placed the links here in one place for you. For the scheme we are using (Grant for Places of Worship – England) the links below will take you to the relevant guidance.
Application guidance
The application guidance file accessed from the link above goes through the questions step by step explaining what you will need for both first and second round applications. This is useful as it helps you see what you need to plan for in your development stage in order to be ready for the second round application. The application itself must be completed online, although you can print off a pdf version to make it easier to share the process of putting together your application. It is worth looking over the online form at the same time though to see exactly what form the answer takes i.e whether it just requires a one word/number answer or a selection from a drop down box as this isn’t always clear in the application guidance. Completing the form online as you progress will also help you ensure you are staying within the word limit.
Activity plan
Management and maintenance plan
Evaluation report
These three forms will be required for your second round application but you need to be familiar with them in the early stages of your application so that you can plan ways to discover the required information during your development phase.
When putting together your budget for the development phase remember to include an allowance for paper, printing and postage costs. Whilst the application itself must be made online you will also have to send two hard copies of everything produced as part of the project to the Heritage Lottery Fund (one copy is passed on to Historic England). As this will include copies of any reports/investigations, drawings, project specifications and tender details this will be a sizeable amount. However it also worth noting that you will be unable to submit your second round application until you have submitted your final progress report and payment request. Therefore if you wish to claim for the cost of posting the hard copy you will need to have it weighed and buy the postage ahead of your submission deadline to allow time for this.
